Emerging Groups and Trafficking in Libya

Emerging Groups and Trafficking in Libya

Abstract

This report investigates migrant departures from Libya to Italy. Combining field intelligence (HUMINT) with open-source data (OSINT), the research confirms Libya’s role as a central hub for migrant smuggling. It highlights a rise in departures from Libya’s western region, especially Abu Kammash, linked to changes in control at the Ras Ajdir border crossing. The report also reveals alleged involvement of local actors and communities in facilitating trafficking, as well as the role of co-national intermediaries. Notably, the number of Sudanese migrants has surged due to the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
